UCAS Attendance Policy

The UCAS attendance policy was designed to help students learn more in class, develop discipline, and to keep disruption in class to a minimum.  One of the goals of UCAS is to help students prepare for college, university, and the world of work.  Punctuality, respect, and responsibility are important personal traits to develop to be successful in these areas.

Students will receive a notice to serve detention if they have:

·  Three or more tardies in one class - A tardy results when a student arrives in class after the bell has finished ringing.

·  One unexcused absence in any class - An absence results when a student arrives about 10-15 minutes after class has started, or doesn't go to class at all.

Students are expected to have the tardies/absence(s) excused, or to serve the detention, within 4 days of the date of the notice.   To excuse an absence, a parent may call in, send a note in with their student, or email our attendance tracker, Julie Schiffman, at schiffmanj at ucas.k12.ut.us.  Please contact her if you have any questions.

Detention is offered Monday through Friday after school from 4:00-5:00. Students are expected to be quietly working on homework or studying during the course of the hour.  Students who are late for detention will not be allowed to attend that day.

Parents are encouraged to check their student’s attendance on SIS. Parents will be notified if the absences and detentions become excessive. If this happens, an administrator/counselor may call a parent meeting and suspend the student until the meeting is held to discuss the attendance issues. After this action is taken and if the student continues to be excessively tardy or absent, they may be asked to seek alternative placements, i.e. East Shore High School (ALLC), Utah Electronic High School, or BYU Independent Study.
